IG orders cybercrime unit to clamp down on cyber bullies, purveyors of fake news

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the police cybercrime unit, the National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC), to clamp down on purveyors of fake news who are bent on jeopardizing Nigeria’s national security.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday by Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Muyiwa Adejobi, Egbetokun tasked the unit to go after individuals and groups who take delight in spreading misinformation and sharing old contents on various social media platforms to undermine public trust in the policing system.

The IGP also ordered that all perpetrators found spreading false information or engaging in cyberbullying will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
